2011: Minority Newborns Became Majority

Moment in History:

On May 17, 2012, the Census Bureau released a report that estimates, “50.4 percent of our nation’s population younger than age 1 were minorities as of July 1, 2011. This is up from 49.5 percent from the 2010 Census taken April 1, 2010.” This is the first time that the number of minority newborns has surpassed the number of white newborns in U.S. history. With an aging white population, and rapid growth in the Latino community this is a milestone in the significant shifts that are taking place among racial demographics in the country.
