1994: Proposition 187

Moment in History:

On November 8, 1994, California voted to pass Proposition 187, or the “Save Our State” Initiative that would limit benefits  that could be received by illegal immigrants, including publicly funded education, publicly-funded, non-emergency health care services, and general financial assistance. The proposition also required service providers to report suspected illegal immigrants to the California’s Attorney General and to the INS, and made the use of false documents a state felony.
