1988: Willie Horton Ad

Moment in History:

In 1988 during the presidential race between Vice President George H.W. Bush and Michael Dukakis, the National Security Political Action Committee commissioned a political ad in favor of Bush. The ad states that while Bush was in favor of the death penalty, Dukakis not only opposed the death penalty but provided “weekend prison passes.” One of the recipients of these passes was the life sentence holding, African American Willie Horton who, while out, stabbed a man and raped his girlfriend.
