This Symposium explores the issues and opportunities for people of color with a particular focus on the role of race and racism in the United States. This PBS ELECTION 2012 special, produced and directed by award-winning filmmaker Phillip Rodriguez, uses the current presidential election as a lens through which to view America’s racial landscape. Among other issues, RACE 2012 delves into immigrants’ reshaping of the American electoral landscape, white voters’ reactions to their declining numbers and diminished influence, and the economic imbalance between races that may affect America’s political future. Fast-moving and non-partisan, RACE 2012 draws insights on racial political history from notable analysts, strategists and activists.

Complaints Welcomed, but So Are the Programs
…Similarly, there has not been much discussion about immigration and race by and between the candidates. But a PBS-distributed documentary on Oct. 16 titled “Race 2012” took a hard-hitting and thought-provoking look at today’s “racially-charged and politically divisive debate over the integration of racial minorities into what has been America’s dominant white culture.” Again, this stirred up some controversy but the point is that PBS put this issue out there for viewers in a serious way that you are not likely to see anywhere else on television.MORE…

On the same night as the second debate, Oct. 16, an hour-long program called “Race 2012″ also was broadcast as a PBS election special. It was billed as “a provocative conversation about race and politics that documents the changing face of America, and how that change may affect the country’s political future . . .
